6.2.1 – Trailer Hand Valve

Do not use it in driving because of the danger of making the trailer skid. The foot brake sends air to all of the brakes on the vehicle (including the trailer(s)). There is much less danger of causing a skid or jackknife when using just the foot brake.

What is the hand valve on a tractor trailer?

Explanation The trailer hand valve, also called the trolley valve or Johnson bar, is used to work the trailer brakes. It should be used only to test the brakes. Using it while a vehicle is in motion could cause a skid.

What is hand control valve?

Hand Control Valve. Heavy duty, durable valve with a lever handle for manually reducing incoming pressure (50-120 PSIG) to desired output pressure. Locking feature for the handle adjustment allows operator to set desired output pressure. Used in auxiliary axle applications and raising/lowering of vehicle.

How does a trailer handbrake work?

When you pull the handbrake, the wheels of the caravan must lock. Under the caravan, approximately at the level of the axle, this rod is connected to a lifting beam which actuates a cable per wheel. Each of the cables spreads the brake shoes apart and thus blocks the drums.

What is the crack the whip effect?

A sudden maneuver by the tractor may cause the rearmost (last) trailer to swing violently and possibly roll over. This is known as the crack-the-whip effect. It is caused by rearward amplification: The farther a trailer is from the tractor, the more likely it is to start swinging dangerously out of control.

What might happen if the trailer is too high?

What might happen if the trailer is too high when you try to couple? If the trailer is too low, the tractor may stike and damage the trailer nose; if the trailer is too high, it may not couple correctly. After coupling, how much space should be between the upper and lower fifth wheel? There should be no space.

What happens when the wheels of a trailer lock up?

The trailer will likely swing around. The trailer will stop. Explanation A trailer tends to swing around, potentially resulting in a trailer jackknife, if its wheels lock up.

What is the blue Gladhand for?

A tractor / trailer typically has two gladhands – one for service brakes and another for emergency brakes. Gladhands are color coded. In North America, service lines are blue and emergency brake lines are red and are standardized by SAE International’s standard SAE J318.

Where is the trailer hand valve located?

The hand valve, as shown in Figure 2-7, is normally located on the steering column and its function is to apply the trailer brakes only, while the foot valve operates both the tractor and trailer brakes.

How do you control the trailer brakes independently?

How can a driver control the trailer brakes independently? The purpose of the trailer brake hand valve (30) is to allow the driver to control independently the amount of application air pressure to be directed to the trailer brakes.

How do you supply air to the trailer tanks?

You supply air to the trailer tanks by: Pushing in the trailer air supply valve. Why should you be sure that the fifth wheel plate is greased as required? After you supply air to the trailer, make sure the air lines are not crossed and The trailer brakes are working.

How does a trailer spring brake valve work?

The supply port on the valve is connected to an air line from the red gladhand. When air pressure is introduced it begins to fill the spring brake chambers through the delivery ports. Eventually the pressure builds until it cages (retracts) the spring allowing the trailer to move.

How do you tell if a trailer is braked?

UnBraked means that all the breaking comes from the towing vehicle. If the trailer has got a a hand brake then there are brake shoes inside the wheel drum which is specified as a braked trailer. If it’s an unbraked trailer it means that it doesn’t incorporate any brakes at all.

How do you engage trailer brakes?
