Don’t place a gait belt over incisions, stitches, tubes, or lines, and never use one on a pregnant patient. The proper use of a gait belt will prevent the caregiver from handling the person by the arm, wrist or underarms and injuring a weak patient.

Where should you put a gait belt?

With the belt label on the inside, the gait belt should go at the patient’s waist and be snug. If the patient has wounds located on the abdomen the gait belt may be more comfortable if worn under the arm pits (Figure 4). Fastening the buckle is like fastening the buckle of a military belt.

What is the difference between a transfer belt and a gait belt?

Transfer belts are assistive devices That are used by caregivers during transfers of a patient from bed to wheelchair or commode/bath and while walking. A transfer belt used to assist a patient or an older adult when out for a supervised walk is generally referred to as a gait belt.

Can you leave a gait belt on a patient?

It’s important to remember that a gait belt is a mobility assistive device, and it should not be used to lift or move patients outright. If the patient is not able to partially move themselves, a powered portable or mounted lift device should be used to safely transfer them.

Should you let a patient put their arms around your neck when you are transferring them?

Roll the senior onto their side, help them into a kneeling position. Have them brace their hands on the chair in front of them. Help them put a single leg up toward the chair, as if doing knee lunges. Reposition the other chair behind them until they can achieve a sitting position.

Move the second chair directly behind your loved one, then ask them to use both their arms and legs to push themselves up and sit back into this chair. You can use your hands to keep your loved one steady, but keep your back upright and make sure they are doing the physical work to lift themselves.
