Shocking your above ground pool once a week will oxidize contaminants, freeing up the chlorine, and keeping your water crystal clear. Regular shock treatments will also kill resistant algae in the water.

How long does it take to shock a above ground pool?

Keep your pump and filter running. Give the shock a good 12 to 24 hours to work it’s magic. If the algae hasn’t cleared up after 24-48 hours, clean and brush the pool and add another shock treatment.

How long should you run filter after shocking pool?

A pool filter should be run for a minimum of 6 hours after shocking a swimming pool. This is to allow the filter to clean the water and give the shock enough time to fully mix with the pool water. Running the filter after shocking for 24 hours to 7 days is necessary if the pool has a large amount of algae.

Is pool shock the same as chlorine?

Shock is chlorine, in a high dose, meant to shock your pool and raise the chlorine level quickly. Chlorine tabs (placed in a chlorinator, floater, or skimmer basket) maintain a chlorine residual in the water. You do need to use both tabs and shock.

How soon after shocking pool can I swim?

After Shocking Your Pool

It is safe to swim once your chlorine levels are around 5 ppm or after 24 hours. It is always best to test first!

Can I add shock and chlorine at the same time?

While shocking and adding algaecide is effective in getting rid of algae, it should not be done together. This is because when you mix chlorine and algaecide together, it renders both of them useless. Hence, you should first shock the pool and wait for the chlorine levels to fall below 5 PPM.

What happens if you swim in a shocked pool?

If you enter the pool immediately following a chlorine pool shock treatment, you are risking as little as skin and eye irritation and as much as fatality.

What chemicals do I need to add to a freshly filled pool?

Chemicals Needed for Pool Start Ups
Stain & Scale Preventer.Granular Shock Chlorine.Chlorine Tablets.pH Increaser and/or pH Decreaser.Alkalinity and/or Calcium Increaser.Cyanuric Acid (Stabilizer)Algaecide and Clarifiers if needed.Complete Test Kit or Test Strips.

What chemicals do I need to start my above ground pool?

Once the pool is opened and the floor and walls have been brushed the first chemical you should add is chlorine to shock it. It’s recommended you add a gallon of liquid chlorine or pound of granular chlorine for every 5,000 gallons of water in the pool. You can also add more chlorine at the end of the opening process.

What time of day should I shock my pool?

The best time of day to shock your pool is in the evening. This is because the sun’s rays can affect the effectiveness of the chlorine by dissolving it too quickly, before it has a chance to rid the pool of contaminants and clean the water.

Why did my pool turn green after I shocked it?

Pools can immediately turn green after shocking when they have metals like copper in the water. These metals oxidise when exposed to high levels of chlorine which makes the pool water turn green. Adding a metal control product such as Zodiac Metal Remover will help to restore the pool water.

Is liquid shock better than powder?

Liquid chlorine leaves no residue and can be up to 80% less expensive. Also, it’s the most commonly used pool sanitation method. It’s available in refillable containers, and it doesn’t need dissolving as it’s a liquid. On the other hand, powder shock is easier to carry and lasts longer.
